Climate change deniers to be banned by Google Advertisers & Publishers
Google announces that from December 6, 2021, it would restrict and prevent climate change sceptics from advertising, publishing, or creating content on its network. According to Google, it is “announcing a new monetization policy for Google advertisers, publishers, and YouTube creators that will restrict advertisements for, and monetization of, anything that defies well-established scientific consensus on the presence and causes of climate change.”
This includes information that refers to climate change as a hoax or a fraud, statements that reject long-term patterns indicating the global temperature is warming, and claims that deny greenhouse gas emissions or human activities contribute to climate change, according to the search company.
“When reviewing material under this new policy, we’ll look carefully at the context in which claims are made, distinguishing between content that presents a false claim as fact and content that reports on or discusses that claim,” Google stated. “We will also continue to allow advertisements and monetization on other climate-related subjects, such as public discussions on climate policy, the various effects of climate change, new research, and more,” The Tech Giant added.
Google interacts with “authoritative sources” on client science, and specialists from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Client Change Assessment Reports are involved on some level. Google is enforcing this across publisher content, Google-served advertising, and YouTube videos monetized through YouTube’s Partner Program using both automatic techniques and human inspection.
Google said that enforcement will begin on December 6th, and that “the Google Ads Unreliable Claims policy will be amended to incorporate a new policy banning material that contains claims about climate change that run counter to scientific consensus.”
Violations of this policy will not result in the instant suspension of your Google Ads account without prior notice. According to Google, a warning will be given at least 7 days before your account is suspended.
