Google Introduces Site Name Feature in Google Search

When a site gets listed on the search result page, it shows the name of the site the ranked page is coming from, this is known as site name.

Let’s not get confused a site name is different from the per-page title links

Google employs various sources to automatically decide the site name. As a website owner you can demonstrate your intended name by adding WebSite structured data

Currently, Site names is available in mobile Google Search results for the following languages – English, French, Japanese, and German.

How site names are created in Google Search? 

Google considers both the content of a site and references to it that appear on the web. The ultimate aim of the site name is to fetch the name that best describes the source.

Moreover, Google Search utilises several sources from a site’s homepage to automatically define site names which includes:

  • WebSite structured data
  • Content in <title> elements
  • Heading elements, such as <h1> elements
  • og:site_name

How to add structured data

Follow the below steps to add structured data to a web page:

  1. Follow the Google’s guidelines, refer to developer’s documentation
  2. Add the mandated properties as specified by Google to the homepage of your website, in either JSON-LD, RDFa, or microdata format.
